Answer :
“What is a “leak down test” and does it require special equipment?”
A leak down test is similar to a compression test, but more in depth. With a compression test, you are simply measuring the amount of compression the cylinder is able to provide. It will only indicate major problems with the cylinder/valves.
For a leak down test, a special tool called a leak down tester is used. It is a fancy pressure guage. You install it into the cylinder, and then pressurize the cylinder with compressed air. The tester will measure the amount of pressure that is allowed to escape (the leak down). It will find much smaller problems than a compression tester can. With a leak down test, you are able to actually measure the amount of pressure loss, as well as pinpoint where it is being lost at. I.E. – past the rings, through the valves, or through a blown head gasket or cracked head.
“Can I run the test with simple compression meter?”
No, it requires a leak down tester.
“Onan engines and parts are scarce and out of business.”
Au contraire. Although Onan is indeed no longer manufacturing engines, most parts are still readily available – even for engines much older than yours.
“Valve replacement or electronics may be hard to find.”
See above answer.
“I guess I am leaning toward a new – used tractor. My Toro has seen a lot of use.
Craig’s list shows a 2 year old Toro Tractor for $800. Lists for $1,600.
Does this sound reasonable?”
There is absolutely nothing wrong with considering a different tractor – especially if yours is getting on in years and is getting worn out. I am simply trying to offer a lower cost alternative.
For this particular tractor, I can not say if it is a good deal or not. It depends on what model the tractor is, how old it is, how many hours may be on it, etc.
If it is in good shape and not all that old, then yes, $800 would most likely be a good deal.
