Question : I have a Linde H30 forklift that “dumps” hydraulic oil periodically. This unit is equipped with a Perkins engine and hydrostatic drive. There is no visible spray to suggest a hose nor is there oil leaking when running. It tends to “dump” when sitting, shut off. The only place to show oil is in middle of the unit, thinking a hydraulic pump, transmission or a relief valve?

Answer : Try the mirror after unit is shut down. That is when all the oil that is thrown around in the bell housing runs to the bottom and leaks out.

Question : i have an issue with the hydro matic transmission. I am unable to disengage or engage the transmission using the relief valve. the rear axle is locked up, how do I fix it?

Answer : Check to make sure that the linkage that you pull out to release the relief valve is actually moving the valve itself. Also make sure that the parking brake is released. If the parking brake is released and then linkage is moving the valve and the problem persists then you likely have something stuck internally inside the unit. The transmission will have to be removed and disassembled to determine the root cause.

Question : i have a john deere 1600 18ft haybine i just had the seals in the pump done i did one round and it quite turning. like it was pluged, but it wasnt. i can hear the oil moving in the neck and can see the hose pressure up to the pump and back to the filter and no movement. could it be the reilf valve? i took the pump off and you cant turn it by hand. but i couldnt turn it by hand when i got it back so i guess you cant and it is fine cause it worked.

Answer :

If I’m not mistaken there is a snap ring in the end of the relief valve that can be removed allowing you to disassemble the valve. I have had limited success in attempting to clean the relief valves and still have them work.

I would suggest disconnecting the hydraulic motor and check to see if you can turn it by hand. In some cases debris can get stuck between the swash plate and the piston carrier allowing oil to bypass in the motor. If after cleaning the relief valve you run it and there is no change take a closer look at the motor.

Let me know what your findings are.

Thanks,
