Question : I have a Ford 1720 tractor. After about an hour of mowing, I smelled oil. I looked down and ther was some oil on the transmission housing at my feet between the seat and steering wheel. I couldn’t see where it was coming from. When I checked the engine oil, the level on the dipstick was above full, when I started it was below the full mark. Can the hyraulic fluid get into the main engin pan? Thanks, Pat

Answer : Pat, the hydraulic pump is mounted on the engine so if the seal goes out in the pump it can let hydraulic oil into the oil pan. The oil being between the seat and steering wheel could be the steering valve or hoses leaking for the steering. I doubt the hydraulic oil is getting into the oil pan. I would just watch whether the oil continues to rise or stays the same. I would be looking for the oil leak at the steering valve. Thanks.
