Question : I’ve got a 99 KW W900 with an eaton fuller 10 spd transmission. My transmission temperature seems to run pretty hot. The gears get “sticky” and tough to shift when the transmission heats up to about 250 i believe. I dont remember exactly what the temperature reading is…but It is at the end of the green line on the gauge….just where the green line meets the yellow line. When I start the truck up in the morning and drive it with the transmission at low temperature…it runs smoothly. But once the truck is running for hours and the transmission is warmed up, the gears get hard to shift. My truck doesnt seem to have the conventional oil cooler that i see on most other trucks that use a radiator type cooler. I dont see any type of oil cooler at all. The first mechanic that I spoke to about this told me that the cooler is actually a canister type of cooler that sits on top of the transmission and uses coolant to cool the transmission. Is this normal for my transmission temperature to be this high? Is it possible that my “canister” oil cooler isnt working?

I am Clayton, Welcome to JA, I can help you.

. You can verify this by looking under the truck, and you will see two heater hose style hoses going to the top of the transmission. The cooler will be mounted on top of the top plate of the transmission. If your transmission is running this hot, I would check the oil level. I have also seen these style coolers leak coolant inside the transmission. If this happens, your transmission fluid will look milky. While you are checking the oil level, the plug is located on the driver side, on the side of the transmission, kinda towards the back, if you see lots of metal on the fill plug, you have a bearing going down and causing the transmission to heat up.
