Question : I have a Thermocast sink that has a burn (or tear, more correctly) in it. How do I go about repairing the tear myself? or is it wiser to have it done professionally?
Answer :
Sorry to have to say… but this repair is not a DIY project. There is considerable skill to get this right and specialty tools are required. Then, of course, there will most likely be some color matching involved. Don’t take the chance of a botched job, call in a professional.

Question : We have a troybilt bronco riding lawn mower that we purchased from Lowe’s in May. We can keep the drive belt on. We bought a new drive belt, put it on, mow around five minutes and the belt keeps kicking off the pulleys………any advice?
Answer :
Check to see if you have a spring missing that would normally keep tension on the belt.
You should have not needed a new belt at all since may
Did you ever hit a solid object hard… ?
If so, you may have bent a pulley, or a spindle. You may have bent the deck (harder to see).
Also a bent blade will cause extra vibration that will shake the belt off.
If none of the above, call Lowes. Ask them who they prefer that you take your unit to for warranty service.
You should not have to pay for repairs if it is under warranty.

Question : I’m having trouble with my new electric start Toro 22 inch recycler.
Soon after we started use of the mower, we had to replace the fuse.
This worked two times, and then it didn’t work. The new fuse doesn’t look wet or greasy like the old one, however, I’m wondering if the wires on these mosers are properly insulated.
Answer :
These fuses MUST be the 40 amp fuse. A smaller fuse will not work so make sure you are using the correct fuse.
Check the wire connections on the ignition switch as well as on the battery to make sure that they have a very firm contact. Loose connections can cause the fuse to blow.
Another problem is that if the engine does not start easily, then many people will continue to crank on the starter until it overheats and then blows the fuse. The starter motor itself will burn out and cause fuses to blow if this is cranked for too long at a time. You should use the 10 seconds on…..2 minutes off….rule.. Which means you cannot crank on the starter for longer than 10 seconds at a time unless you let it cool for a whole 2 minutes. If it is cranked longer than that without cooling, it will melt the insulation on the windings ins the starter causing a short and then the starter will have to be replaced,
If all the wires and connections and the ignition switch check out ok, then the starter is probably the problem.

Question : How do I flash an 8ft wide X 5ft long square opening on a high pitched roof that has architechural asphalt shingles? The opening is centered over a 14ft X 12ft planted area which is bordered by concrete driveway and elevated entry on two sides and walls on the other two. The roof edge along the driveway has a rain gutter. I want to redirect rain runoff from the high side of the roof opening around the opening so that the planted area doesn’t become a swimming pool. It occurred to me that I could construct a low 1 X 8 inch curb around the opening (approx.2-3 inches proud of the roof sheathing) and flash it like a chimney but I was hoping a better solution was out there.
Answer : Yes. Seeing that it is only 4 feet to the gutter, place a 8′ gutter in the opening at the high side and conductor pipe it to the gutter 4 feet farther down. You can run the conductor pipe under the roof deck.

Question : How difficult is is to replace two sinks – we have rust in one of our bathroom sinks, and the outside of our kitchen sink seems to have worn a lot due to moisture – the edges have lifted up and are sharp and has rusty edges. How would I go about replacing them? We will definitely use a professional, just curious to know what the process might be, and how expensive it is.
Answer : Hi and thanks XXX XXXXX JustAnswer.com.
It’s no big deal. The hardest part is separating the old plumbers putty &/or caulkings. Most older sinks have retaining clips and they can be corroded and difficult. It should not take more than 30 minutes per sink to remove, & clean the counter. Add 10 minutes to disconnect old supplies & waste. Installing the new is about 45 minutes each sink. Another 30 minutes each to redirect & connect waste. Another 30-45minutes each to install new faucets. There will be minor necessities that any pro would have in his van, or there will be a trip to a home center or supply house once these needs are identified. This assumes you have already purchased the sinks & faucets, the pop up drain, the kitchen sink drain basket, & plumbers putty.
Total 2.75hr per sink more or less. Only you know what the hourly labor rate in your area is. If it were me, I’d bill for 7 hr to cover running around for necessities and both installs at $50/hr.

Question : I just bought a little place in Key Largo. A previous owner apparently used grout like icing to cover the kitchen counter (no tiles, just grout). Eventually, I’ll rip and replace this DIY effort. But to save time and money, I wonder if I can just sand the surface and paint with one of the super lacquers made for painting cabinets? Suggestions?
Answer : You may be able to accomplish what you have in mind, however the initial step probably won’t be “sanding.” More like “grinding.” I suggest you use an angle grinder with a disk used for concrete to get the main part pretty smooth. Then you will be able to have some success with sanding. Any paint store or department can advise you on a paint product but for sure you will want an “enamel” and at least “semi-gloss” if not high gloss. Also to get paint to adhere you will need to apply primer. Dennis (cut2it)

Question : I’ve got a 99 KW W900 with an eaton fuller 10 spd transmission. My transmission temperature seems to run pretty hot. The gears get “sticky” and tough to shift when the transmission heats up to about 250 i believe. I dont remember exactly what the temperature reading is…but It is at the end of the green line on the gauge….just where the green line meets the yellow line. When I start the truck up in the morning and drive it with the transmission at low temperature…it runs smoothly. But once the truck is running for hours and the transmission is warmed up, the gears get hard to shift. My truck doesnt seem to have the conventional oil cooler that i see on most other trucks that use a radiator type cooler. I dont see any type of oil cooler at all. The first mechanic that I spoke to about this told me that the cooler is actually a canister type of cooler that sits on top of the transmission and uses coolant to cool the transmission. Is this normal for my transmission temperature to be this high? Is it possible that my “canister” oil cooler isnt working?
Answer : Chat Conversation Started
Clayton :
I am Clayton, Welcome to JA, I can help you.
Clayton :
. You can verify this by looking under the truck, and you will see two heater hose style hoses going to the top of the transmission. The cooler will be mounted on top of the top plate of the transmission. If your transmission is running this hot, I would check the oil level. I have also seen these style coolers leak coolant inside the transmission. If this happens, your transmission fluid will look milky. While you are checking the oil level, the plug is located on the driver side, on the side of the transmission, kinda towards the back, if you see lots of metal on the fill plug, you have a bearing going down and causing the transmission to heat up.
